    • Lying Chest Opener

    • http://www.doyogawithme.com/. This fantastic pose encourages the upper back into extension and gives a great stretch to the chest and the fronts of the shoulders. Many of us sit slouched in front of the computer for hours on a daily basis and I can't imagine anything better to counteract this habitual posture.
    • Reclining Hand to Toe Sequence (Supta Padangusthasana)

    • This is one of my favorite pose sequences. In Sanskrit supra means lying down and padangustha is big toe. This is a series of poses that stretch the legs at different angles and include stretches for the hamstrings, piriformis, calves and groin muscles. Do your best to keep your pelvis stable (keep it from tilting while you move from one pose to the other). If you would like to see more videos like this one, visit http://www.doyogawithme.com/. It's free!
    • Bound Half Lord of the Fishes (Baddha Ardha Matsyendrasana)

    • This is one of my favorite poses, because of the variety of ways in which it stretches the body. There are few poses that give my shoulders such a deep, satisfying stretch. Add the stretch to the hips and the deep twist and this pose is pure bliss! Baddha means bound; ardha is half, matsya is fish and indra is ruler. Ensure that your pelvis acts as an anchor so that your spine can lift and lengthen to its fullest capacity. Breathe deeply and avoid stiffening the body.

  • Here's a poem I used in a recent Salute to the Sun class. It is from Yoga Teachers of Colorado, 1999-2000 Quote Book.

    Look to this day!
For it is life, the very life of life.
    In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence:
    The bliss of growth
    The glory of action
    The splendor of achievement,
For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision
But today well lived make every yesterday
    a dream of happiness.
And tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day!
Such is the salutation to the dawn.
    -Translated from Sanskrit

  • Hello, I am new to the YJ online community and excited to have this resource of fellow teachers, students, and enthusiasts to learn from. I thought it would be fun to put together a class that honors or celebrates the sun. I know, we have sun salutations, but beyond that... does anyone have any idea for poses, sequences, meditations, etc that would fit with this theme?

  • Hi everyone,
I'm new to the YJ online community. I have a question about giving physical adjustments. I teach most of my classes at universities. One of them has documented cases of H1N1 (swine flu) on campus. Do you think I ought to stop giving physical adjustments during class? I'd feel horrible if I contributed to the spread of flu or any other contagious disease. But many students enjoy and benefit from the assistance. I have considered asking everyone to wash their hands before class, but even that won't eliminate all risks. Anyone else have thoughts on this topic?
    Many thanks!
