Early New Years Resolution

New Year's isn't here for a few more months, but I've decided to start my resolutions early...I have two. One is to get though the stack of books I've been reading...there are 15! I start a book, put it down and begin another. So before I can start a new one, I will finish all the others. I believe this will teach me to follow through, something that is a weakness of mine. I am perpetually finding something new and interesting that will be my next job, hobby, etc. Unfortunately none of these beautiful ideas ever come to see the light of day as I move on to the next one too quick for the old one to even have a chance. So I will start with my stack of books and go from there, consciously reading a bit each evening.

The second resolution is to get back to my personal practice. I had a baby five months ago and she has taken over my time, my life and my heart. I also teach yoga so what little yoga time I get in is with my class, not exactly a practice that is beneficial to me as I need it (to relax, let go and get my postnatal body working right again) In order to reach this goal I have downloaded a bunch of podcasts. Yes I am a certified teacher and can do my own sequence, but by doing the podcasts I will, in addition to my above mentioned body goals, learn a few new things along the way. I have a 20 minute one for when my daughter naps and an hour and a half one for the evenings after she goes to bed. Depending on my day will depend what practice I choose.

One usually chooses resolutions as a way of improving their lives. Most do not stick. It takes dedication and practice. I have in all my years only once stuck to a resolution, it was to try new foods (I used to be a very picky eater). This was a resolution from 8 years ago, I am still doing it and have reaped many tasty benefits (some gross ones too!). So going off of this I will do my best to stick to my resolutions and enjoy the benefits along the way, in this case, more knowledge on topics from actually finishing a book and a stronger, more flexible and relaxed body. Sounds like a good way to live if you ask me!

  • I've never done a sankalpa, but I'm going to read and learn more about it, sounds great! The closest I've come is setting intentions when I do my yoga practice.

  • Hi. I'm glad you have set goals for yourself. It made me think that I should do one too. My diet could use some work so I'm going to start there (Toady - with not eating anymore of my childrens' Halloween candy!!!) Have you ever made a sankalpa? I find that a very powerful way of making a resolution. Good luck!
